These pistols have 'Springfield Custom' etched on the slide, and will have the 'NM' prefix to the serial number. So I had to check it out.
Click to expand. The G.I. Model has vertical serrations and the Mil-Spec and Loadeds have the slanted serrations on the slide. It would be pretty hard to make a G.I. Pistol look like a Loaded in this regard.
If the owner went as far as to add a fitted beavertail (with radius cut frame), have forward serrations cut into the slide, dovetail the sight cuts, add Novak sights, a three hole trigger with an overtravel stop, an ambidextrous safety, added ambi safety grips (or modded the originals to fit) and pay to have the entire pistol refinished to hide the evidence from these modifications, they've sunk more money in the pistol than a Loaded costs NIB. They'd be forced to take a hge hit on the pistol anyways, and you'd be looking at a good buy in my opinion. Wow, I guess I've pretty much outlined the differences between a G.I., Mil-Spec and a Loaded models!
I just picked up this 1911 springfield GI used for $475. I had a few questions for those who have knowledge on the model in question. First off, i noticed some say made in brazil and some dont. My understanding is that they are all made in brazil, but do the full size GI models not have 'brazil' stamped on the frame? I was also wondering about the year is was made.
My serial number is marked ww 34xxx. Im not sure if i have a 'newer' one or an 'older' one. And what do these guns go for new?
I could only find one on GB and it was listed at $700, but ive heard they are $550. Are these guns hard to find? GB had plenty of the compact versions and mil spec versions. Retail at budsgunshop on a GI is 514$. They don't have them in stock that's just what it is listed as the last price. All the springfield frames are made in brazil if i'm not mistaken.
If the frame isn't stamped with brazil under the barrel you might find the Imbel marking under the grips. Originally it was a government armory in springfield massachusetts in the 1700s. Springfield armory was closed in the 1960s and in the mid-70's the name was used to create the company we know today. I'm not 100% sure if they have always been having the products manufactured in brazil since the 70s or if that was a move they made later.

I can't remember more of the history on it, there is a wiki about it i read a while back. I'm sure you could find it with a quick google search to learn more. Can't help you with the serial number question. Springfield Inc has always used Imbel forged frames, or they finish machined rough or semi-finished Imbel forgings here.
Fed import law has something to do with the Made in Brazil stampings. Don't think the ones forged there/final machined here require it. Imbel stuff is first class. Not to be confused with the junk from Taurus.
BTW, I saw a 60 Minutes piece years ago about Craftsman wrenches. They may say 'FORGED IN USA', but were final machined and chrome plated in, Brazil! Mostly due to Brazil's total lack of EPA-type regs covering chrome plating and disposal of waste chemicals.
The 'Base' GI Repro Model is frequently used as a base for many custom 1911 Projects. I wanted mine to better represent a WW-II GI Issue and replaced/added most of the internals and even found a pair of Colt, Wide Ring WW-II Grips. The trigger/firing mechanism has been replaced, as well as the internal gun lock.to make it as close to possible to an actual GI 1911.
